1The swinging sixties
Probably the most exciting time in the history of pop music. As rock and roll slipped into blues based pop from the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Animals and of course The Beatles, the music swiftly morphed into inventive, melodic and driving music. In the second part of the 60's era, on any day the radio would pump out a gumbo of anything from The Monkees and Tom Jones to Cream and Jimi Hendrix. Amongst this plethora of aural delights, in 1968 a record burst into the charts staying there for 8 weeks and with a sound and sentiment that perfectly summed up the summer of love and the attitude of the youth of the day. With an eponymous highly orchestrated version of the superb pop song "Yesterday Has Gone" which reached number four and stayed in the British charts for eight weeks, Cupid's Inspiration had arrived. The follow up single "My World" although critically acclaimed only managed to reached the 30's in the charts and the future was looking uncertain for the band. Under these circumstances, in 1969 vocalist Terry Rice Milton left to pursue a solo career and in a short space of time there were various comings and goings until in 1971 the line up had settled down with original drummer Roger Gray still holding down the beat, Martin Cure having taken over on vocals and Paul Shanahan and Bob Poole on guitar and bass respectively. With only one more hiccough in 1972 when Roger Gray sadly left the band to spend more time with his wife and young daughter to be replaced by Andy Chaplin, Cupid's Inspiration gigged intensively until the late 80's with a couple of drummer changes and a two year break when they dipped their feet into the rock world with the highly rated and fondly remembered band Chevy. The 90's found Martin Cure running his own P.A. Company, Andy Chaplin owning a market garden business, Paul Shanahan the marketing director of a chemical company and Bob Poole living and playing out of Germany in various bands touring around the world. In 2010 Paul Shanahan recruited old friend Bob Poole and former Peppermint Circus singer Paul Thomas they began to play together again. In no time it became apparent that Cupids Inspiration were still remembered by many and at the instigation of their now personal manager Tony Walsh and Karl (mister Sixties) Thompson, Cupid's Inspiration were soon back on the road. After the first year playing gigs around the UK, the original drummer Roger Gray was contacted and was welcomed back in from the cold. Now with a new lease of life, packed with enthusiasm, young enough to rock and roll and old enough to know how, Cupids are really back! Achieving fantastic audience responses wherever they play, the bands blend of melodic harmonies and top class rendition of 60's favourites plus of course their own hit records means they are a perfect way for those who remember to re-live those fabulous sixties and for later generations to get a taste of what they missed. |
